Pack 255 was established over 60 years ago. Our regular Pack meetings are held at Half Moon Bay Yacht Club at the harbor. Our Scouts come from the greater Half Moon Bay, San Mateo Coastside; from Montara, Moss Beach, El Granada, Princeton, Miramar, and Half Moon Bay and our membership covers all of the area schools. Our Scouts are divided into Dens of similiarly aged boys and girls -- K through 5th grade.
Some of our big events include the Pinewood Derby race (traditionally held at the Half Moon Bay Fire Department on Main Street) where Scouts get the chance to make their own wooden cars and race them on a racing track with a digital timer. Our much beloved Cub Mom Dance is in February and our Camp Out for the Blue and Gold (honoring the founding of Scouting) is in March. In addition, we have a strong commitment to "Do a Good Turn" in our community.
Community service includes "Scouting for Food", "One Warm Coat", beach clean-up, and other service projects.
Our big fundraiser of the year is selling Scout popcorn in our community. This not only reduces costs to our scouting families and supports our local council, but teaches Scouts good communication and salesmanship skills.
Our Pack is run totally by volunteers. Parents are encouraged to participate. Some of our parents become Den Leaders and Pack Leaders. Our Pack leadership consists of a Cubmaster, Assistant Cubmasters, Committee Chair and committee members. Dens are lead by Den Leaders and Assistant Den Leaders. All of our leaders are Boy Scout Trained for their positions and have undergone Youth Protection Training. And we work closely with Boy Scout Troop 255 out of the Half Moon Bay Yacht Club to prepare our older Scouts for the transition to Boy Scouts.
Pack meetings are where we get to recognize the work and achievements on our scouts and have fun as a group. Sometimes we'll have relay races, other times we'll have Scouts do a short skit or song, and sometimes we get to put a pie in the face of our Cubmaster!
Scouts are organized into smaller dens by grade. It is in these bi-weekly meetings that the necessary achievements are completed to advance in rank. Den meetings are typically one hour long, held at Scouts' homes up and down the Coastside, including Half Moon Bay, or at a special location, like a fire station, and combine fun activities with discussions about scouting values such as honesty, commitment to family, and commitment to our community.
Dens are organized in the following Ranks:
Kindergarten: Lion
1st Grade: Tiger
2nd Grade: Wolf
3rd Grade: Bear
4th & 5th Grade: Webelos
